The historical account demonstrates continued Slovak nationalist aspirations. In addition, the Slovak historical experience and traditions diverge from that of the Czechs. This difference is manifest in two distinct political cultures. While the Czech political culture is one dominated by pluralistic political values, the Slovak political culture has been characterized by a search for national identity, specifically in terms of language, and further development of its society, economics, and culture.

Ari examination of the subjective perceptions of the Slovaks, in comparison to the Czechs, reinforces the differences between the two nationalities. Surveys of Slovaks exist for 1968. Like the Czech surveys, these surveys are derived from the Institute of Public Opinion of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The two questions used in assessing the political values of the Slovak citizenry are: 1) when you contemplate the history of the Slovak nation, which period do you consider to be the most glorious, a time of advance and development? and, 2) which period do you consider to be the least glorious, the most unfortunate time for the Slovak nation? The results of these survey questions are reported in Tables 6.6 and 6.7.
